Journaling is a tool that provides many benefits to those who want to engage in self-healing.
The great thing about journaling is that it is therapeutic for your mind, body, and spirit. As easy as it is to do, there are still many who struggle to turn their journaling into a sense of self-therapy, as I like to call it. In my previous post, I talked about how to journal in 2022 and beyond.
I gave three quick and easy journaling steps and techniques to turn your journal into effective self-help.
The same way you self-heal your physical body by increasing your intake of water, exercising three times a week, or eating more vegetables, the same goes for your mind. It is an essential practice to have a tool-box of self-healing tools to replenish your mind daily.
You can engage in emotional self-healing via various strategies such as meditation and journal prompts.
I’m going to walk you through a few self-healing journal prompts for your emotional healing that are inside my newest Therapeutic Journal by Rachel Harper called Emotional Healing Therapeutic Journal.

Self-Discovery & Emotional Healing Journal Prompts
What happened to make me feel this way?
The thing I love about this self-discovery journal prompt and emotional healing journal prompt is that this journal writing prompt invites you to be honest about what happened to you.
Upon writing the situation that happened, you may begin to realize the seriousness of the situation or lack thereof. As such, you’ll either dig deeper into what happened or let it go. Eventually, you’ll be able to take situations and learn how to have control, not over the situation, but how you respond to it while in the moment.
This is critical to the success of your relationships, whether personal or otherwise. It’ll help your body because then you won’t sit in a state of reliving and replaying the situation over and over again in your head.
This can cause your body to relive the physiological experience over and over again.
The situations you dealt with during the day had bearings on your emotions. Whether that’s the emotions of joy and happiness or fear and anger.
Turn journaling into a journey of acknowledging and honoring your emotions; good and bad.

What judgments do I have towards my emotions?
This is another great journal question.
Have you ever felt emotionally hurt by an individual and tried telling yourself to just get over it? You were still angry, sad, or frustrated but you told yourself to move on?
Essentially that’s not only you trying to ignore and not acknowledge your emotional pain. It may be grounded in the judgment of feeling ashamed or embarrassed that you feel the way that you do.
One of the things I always tell those who work with me is to acknowledge your emotions, identify your emotions, then honor your emotions.
Why? Because you can’t heal what you don’t feel or quite simply, ignore.
Will something bad happen if I welcome this emotion?
There is this huge fear by many who believe that if you acknowledge an emotion it may lead to a diagnosis.
I hear individuals say all the time that they’re afraid to go to counseling because then they’ll learn that “something is wrong with them”. Quite simply, ignorance is never bliss. And like I said before, what you don’t feel, you can’t heal.
There is a difference between welcoming an emotion with the intent of getting to the root of the who, what, when, where, why, and how of your emotions vs. welcoming the emotion and allowing it to linger without resolution.

What may I have misunderstood about this situation?
So, let’s say the emotion you’re honoring in the moment was triggered by a situation between you and someone else.
Is it possible that there is a misunderstanding about the situation? What I like to do is give people the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps the individual who cut you off on the road and yelled at you out their window has nothing against you.
Maybe their loved one just passed away. Maybe they were just fired from their job. What if they just received the worst diagnosis of their life?
This is why it’s important to have emotional intelligence. The emotions you see on the surface are not always the emotion of the person’s heart. Anger on the surface may be feelings of loneliness deep down.
While you can’t control other people, you can always control your own thoughts and reactions to other people.
The easiest way to journal every day is to make dealing with your emotions a daily goal.
Every day, there are negative thoughts and emotions that infiltrate your mind. Journaling allows you to handle negative emotions. Take those negative emotions and turn them into positive emotions with therapeutic journaling.
Write opposing thoughts in your journal. Say things such as, “I can do it” so it takes space away from negative thoughts.
Become your own cheerleader and manifest the life you desire with just pen and paper. Most importantly, if you don’t want to journal everyday, don’t.
Journal when necessary.
How will I feel about this situation in five years?
This journal prompt allows you to quickly see how you may be blowing a situation out of proportion.
There are times when what you are dealing with, you react to it on a high emotional level in the moment. One of the things I used to do when I first got married is, I would be so upset when it’s time to go to bed and the kitchen still had dirty dishes in the sink.
I would be so angry that it always felt like I was the only one who cared about the dishes being cleaned before bed. Eventually, I had to realize that I was really blowing that situation out of proportion. All it required was a simple conversation about expectations and it also took me releasing some of my expectations.
It’s ok if I’m too tired to clean the kitchen after cooking and vice versa with my husband. If the kitchen gets cleaned the next morning, it’s ok. Here it is seven years later. Had I lived my life without flexibility I’d still feel upset about this situation.
My body would feel that anger and physiologically react negatively towards it.
There are psychosomatic side effects to holding on to emotional trauma and pain. Engaging in writing therapy can help curve those psychosomatic side effects of emotional pain.
Want to engage in daily journaling? Do it at the same time every day to remain consistent. Journaling can become boring for some.
Want to avoid getting bored with journaling? Find a place that’s engaging such as a coffee shop that plays light music. Journaling in bed when you’re super sleepy may not be such a great idea.
Don’t set your journey up for failure.

This is why journaling for therapeutic purposes is important to your personal development and healing. Don’t be fooled by the many journal prompts in which people just pour questions from the top of their heads and say they’re for your anxiety.
